I'd call this a contradiction:

"Laser Weight Control -- 100% Natural"

The reward to get this dog back is listed at 3000 pesos -- almost $300 US.

Morning In Mexico City

sunny 29 °C

A long, convoluted trip yesterday ended with me with a new passport and in a 45-minute line for a taxi at Mexico City airport at midnight last night. I'll spare the details, not so much out of a fear of boring anyone, but out of disinclination to relive the events.

Most guidebooks to Mexico will tell you to confirm any directions you get from a local, because it's considered impolite to just tell someone "No sé" when they ask for help. This also applies to taxi drivers -- mine last night deliberately turned into a small traffic jam so he'd have time to page through his Mexico City atlas to find where I was going. I tried reasoning with him -- I'd checked the location on Google Maps before I left, so I knew exactly where the hotel was once he'd gotten us from the airport into town. No point though, he was going to find it himself. We got to the intersection where I'd told him to turn left; he turned right and started counting the numbers of the buildings. "204, 206... Qué número?" "94."

It's all fine now, though, because I woke up to a sunny day in Colonia Roma. Visual evidence from the avenue directly below my front window:

It's not a boring neighborhood, either. There's an art exhibition in the middle of the avenue on the weekends, so I grabbed an orange-grapefruit juice from a juice stand and browsed the paintings, photos, and jewelry. I did a loop around my hotel on about a 4 or 5 block radius, getting my bearings. I grabbed a truly excellent espresso from Cafe de Carlo around the corner, made in a gorgeous 60 year old espresso machine. The owner's 9 or 10 year old daughter was helping to wait tables, he asked me to speak English to her so she could practice. Around the next corner is a used bookstore. I bought a Gabriel García Márquez novel, which should humble me if I start thinking my Spanish is good.

I walked up past the Plaza Rio de Janeiro, featuring a double-sized bronze replica of Michelangelo's David, and found this truck outside a Jesuit church:

In Mexico, the Lord endorses trucking companies.

My [temporary] Neighborhood

rain 12 °C

Take a look around on Google Maps, or read about it on Wikipedia.

Here's a nice photo gallery; hopefully the shady, tree-lined streets are not cherry-picked. I especially like the carnecería.

Finally, pray for sun.
